Relive Errol Flynn's Adventures on the Iconic Rio Grande Rafting Tour

One of Jamaica’s largest rivers was aptly named Rio Grande (Big River) by the Spanish colonists who preceded the English. Situated in the lush parish of Portland in western Jamaica, the river has become one of the island’s most famous tourism attractions.

The pull of the Rio Grande is the famous rafting experience that was made popular by world-renowned actor Errol Flynn who arrived in Jamaica for the first time during the 1940s and fell in love with the island. Flynn spent a lot of his time in Portland where his presence attracted tourists and other celebrities as he contributed to the development and economy of the area.

He noticed how locals used bamboo rafts to move bananas on the Rio Grande river, and he envisioned this as a unique way to enjoy Jamaica's beauty. What was a traditional agriculture-related activity became a fun pastime.

Today, the Rio Grande Rafting Tour operates daily, letting you experience the beauty of Portland from a unique vantage point. You are guided by a skilled captain on a handcrafted bamboo raft, which can seat two adults and a small child. The rafts are comfortable and offer a laid-back way to enjoy the surrounding scenery on this two to three hour tour.

And the scenery cannot be overstated. After your journey kicks off at Rafter’s Rest the lush rainforest teeming with birdlife will reveal itself to you. The tropical beauty accompanied by a musical score of flowing water, singing birds and your own chatter and laughter will leave you breathless in some places and totally relaxed and at peace in others.

Your guide might share interesting stories about the local area, plants, and animals.

And of course there is swimming or a shallow dip to be enjoyed at the right spot.

For your trip, pack comfy clothes, sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a towel. Consider bringing a waterproof phone case to capture memories on the river.

Your driving time from Kingston to the Rio Grande will be between two and two and a half hours through the tropical countryside and along the scenic Caribbean coastline.
