Emancipation Park: A national symbol of freedom
Emancipation Park was created as a tribute to the end of slavery, honouring the freedom of the Jamaican people. It is located just across the street from the Jamaica Pegasus giving you easy access to this important historical attraction.
The seven-acre park sitting on land that has changed hands throughout Jamaica’s history features trees and plants reflecting Jamaica’s tropical beauty; large spaces for quiet reflection, walking and events; ancestral symbols demonstrating the island’s cultural ties to Africa; and the attraction’s famous masterpiece, a sculpture called ‘Redemption Song’ that celebrates the freedom of Jamaicans.
The natural beauty of the park includes the national tree known as the Blue Mahoe and the national flower which is called the Lignum Vitae (Tree of Life). Poui trees, Bougainvilleas, Poincianas and Poor Man's Orchids provide the vibrant colours that add to this celebration of freedom while the Bull Thatch Palm and Royal Palm add to the tropical flair.
The Adinkra symbols incorporated into the design of the park reinforce the connections between Jamaicans and West Africa, the region from which slaves were brought to Jamaica during the time of slavery.
The symbols with names like Futumfrafo, Wafa Aba and Eban represent diverse aspects of life such as diversity, perseverance, love and safety. These themes had their own unique significance during the era of slavery and many of them are intertwined with the culture of independent Jamaica, today.
The 11-foot bronze sculpture, ‘Redemption Song’, by Laura Facey portrays two nude figures, a man and a woman looking to the skies, an image of triumph over enslavement. The cascading fountain at its base symbolises the washing away of the suffering brought about by human bondage.
Over 100 people participated in the work of creating ‘Redemption Song’ which was completed in 2003.
These features of the park which also include reflecting pools, fountains, gardens and stonework provide the atmosphere for whatever you want to do in this sacred space whether that’s meditation, sightseeing, socialising with friends, exercising, attending or staging an event.
Although the park is in close proximity to the hotel allowing for easy access, feel free to consult with our front desk if you want an organised guided tour or if you are looking for information on staging an event. We will be happy to help you enjoy this unique Jamaican attraction in whatever way you choose.
